Des Moines man facing several charges after allegedly kidnapping daughter

A Des Moines man is facing kidnapping and other charges after a four-year-old was taken from a home on the North side of Des Moines.

Des Moines Police say 36-year-old Duane VanDenHemel forced his way into a home on Sunday by kicking in a door while armed with a machete-style knife.

They say he then threatened the child's mother, and took the child from the home. He's legally not allowed to have contact with the four-year-old.

VanDenHemel was arrested ten minutes later, and the child was safely located at a different home less than five minutes after that.

He's now in custody in the Polk County Jail facing first-degree kidnapping, burglary, and violation of a no-contact order charges.
