(Des Moines, IA) -- Librarians and educators are closer to having rules for how to evaluate which materials are acceptable under a new Iowa law prohibiting books and curriculum in K-12 schools that depict sex acts.

The Iowa Board of Education is voting to move ahead with final rules that would allow books to have neutral mentions of LGBTQ characters that don't promote.

First offenses would be written warnings with disciplinary action possible for repeat offenses.

A public hearing on the rules will be held December 11th.
