Des Moines Police have identified the man who was shot and killed by officers last week in downtown Des Moines as 70-year-old Charles Leonard.

Police responded to The Elsie Apartments on November 26th around 6 a.m. on a report of a man threatening a woman with a gun.

Officers arrived at the scene and say Leonard raised a pistol toward them, leading them to open fire. He later died from his injuries. Police later determined the gun was an airsoft pellet gun without the orange safety cap.

The officers involved have also been identified as Senior Police Officers Christian Bishop and Lanny Herzog. Both are on administrative assignment.
