(Des Moines, IA) -- Today is Giving Tuesday, when a multitude of organizations ask for donations. In Des Moines, one option is the MercyOne Foundation. Joan Bindel is with them.

"In the past five years, we've focused primarily on our William J. Semon Family Resource Fund," Bindel says. "On Giving Tuesday, it's a day where we can run a campaign that just focuses on a single fund.

The fund forwards the money to families of cancer patients to help offset the cost of the illness.

"Treatment costs or co-pays, travel expenses, medication or nutritional supplements," Bindel says. "We award patients funds based on whatever our nurse navigators tell us is important."

But that's just one way to help MercyOne's Foundation, which has 200 funds to help patients with their bills. Bindel says the focus may be on the Semon fund, but they welcome donations to any of them on Giving Tuesday.

This year's goal for the Semon Fund is $10,000.
