(Waukee, IA) -- A winter tradition is back in Waukee. WinterFest returns to the downtown triangle area tonight. It's one of the fastest growing cities in the country, but organizers say this event makes Waukee feel like a small town again.

Danae Edwards is a Parks and Recreation supervisor with the city.

"To me, it's really just a magical place," Edwards says. "We decorate the downtown. The businesses that are around the triangle area are very supportive of this event. They help decorate, and it just kind of brings that small town vibe back into Waukee as we continue to grow."

Edwards says it's important to the city to keep that sense of community as it grows.

"...to give back to the community and just really instill that quality of life and those small town traditions that many of us grew up in," Edwards says.

Santa will be in town, and there will be more for those attending to do. That includes the unique ping pong ball drop.

"One of my favorite activities that we have is a snow ball drop," Edwards says. "It's hundreds of ping pong balls that we drop from the sky to look like snow flakes. Kids can collect those to turn those in for books."

The event runs from 4-8 p.m. and is free to the public to attend.
