(Undated) -- A man convicted of killing a man in Omaha in 1983, has died in custody. Corrections officials say 68-year-old Edward Lee died Saturday, December 14, 2024, at an Omaha hospital. Lee was incarcerated at the Omaha Correctional Center (OCC).
Lee’s sentence began on January 24, 1983. He was serving a life sentence out of Douglas County for first degree murder. Investigators say on August 7th, 1982 Lee shot Wilbert Swick after he became irritated that Swick blew Lee's girlfriend a kiss. Lee's girlfriend, Bonnie Welker, had been driving at the time. Swick was a passenger in another car. Investigators say Lee shot Swick once, and Swick died at Midlands Hospital.
The cause of death has not yet been determined, Lee was being treated for a medical condition. As is the case whenever an inmate dies in the custody of the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS), a grand jury will conduct an investigation.
