A suspect is dead in an officer-involved shooting after Des Moines Police say he fired a handgun toward officers.

Officers responded to a home on the Southeast side of Des Moines just before 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. Police were attempting to locate an adult male with felony warrants for multiple offenses, including Domestic Abuse Assault and Felon in possession of a firearm.

DMPD says a preliminary review of the bodyworn camera evidence shows officers encountering an adult male within the home that they believed was the wanted person.

Police say the man then tried to flee with officers following and ordering him to stop, and show his hands. Police say video evidence shows he then fired a handgun toward officers, leading two officers to return fire, hitting the man. He died at the scene from his injuries.

No officers were injured in this shooting.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation has been requested to lead the investigation into this shooting.
