One Dead After Crash Near Storm Lake, Fog Possible Factor

(Buena Vista County, IA) -- One person is dead after a weekend crash in northwest Iowa. The Iowa State Patrol says a northbound SUV crossed the center line and struck a Jeep going south on U.S. Highway 71, just outside of Storm Lake around 5 a.m. Sunday morning. The driver of the SUV, 27-year-old Derren Mauricio, was pronounced dead at the scene, the occupants of the Jeep, 21-year-old Estevan Rodriguez and 30-year-old Lucero Martinez-Juarez were both treated at a local hospital for injuries. Their condition is unknown. ISP says dense fog may have played a role in the crash, which remains under investigation.
