A Special Census shows that the City of Ankeny has grown to 76,207, an increase of 12.25% since the 2020 Census.
"With these new Census results, we have surpassed Iowa City as the fifth-largest city [in the state]," said Ankeny Mayor Bobbi Bentz. "Just being that large city that's a very growing, successful city is important to our future."
In a press release, City Manager Mike Schrock says the updated population count means Ankeny will receive an additional $1,168,960 in Road Use Tax funds each year.
"The number one thing we probably hear from residents about living in Ankeny that is harder to deal with is traffic and the flow of traffic around the community," Bentz said. "So, this is a great way for us to deal with that and bring more funds into that space."
The last official U.S. Census Bureau count in 2020 recorded Ankeny's population at 68,887.
The city says about six new people moved to Ankeny every day over the last four years.
