A U.S. probation officer who shot himself inside the Federal courthouse in downtown Des Moines has died.

Des Moines Police responded to the courthouse on Tuesday morning just after 8:30 on a report of a shooting. Officers found an adult male employee inside the courthouse in an area of restricted access with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

He later died at a local hospital.

The shooting is still under investigation. The U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Iowa says the officer was a nine-year veteran of the U.S. Probation Office.
