Des Moines Metro Ranked Second Best Mid-Sized Metro for Working Mothers

(Des Moines, IA) -- A new national study ranks the Des Moines metro as the second best mid-sized metro for working mothers.

The study from Coworking Cafe found that Des Moines ranks the lowest in the nation for childcare costs, totaling 7% of household income. The study finds the average commute time in the Des Moines area is 20 minutes, the third shortest among mid-sized metros. Over 80 percent of mothers in the Des Moines area are employed, up significantly from the national average.

Other key results from the study include:

  • The median income for working mothers in the Des Moines metro is $52,000 per year, ranking 5th among mid-sized metro areas
  • The Des Moines metro ranks #1 in the nation for schools and childcare centers per 100 thousand children
  • 79% of working mothers have employer-based health insurance, almost 10 points above the national average
  • Air quality across the Des Moines metro ranks #15 among mid-sized metro areas.
