Three 19-year-olds are in custody in connection with the fire that severely damaged a bridge on the Raccoon River Valley Trail this week in Adel.

The Dallas County Sheriff's Office say the three unlawfully entered an area under the bridge, and then started a fire. DCSO says that wood continued to be added to the fire, causing it to grow significantly. Embers from the fire eventually ignited the bridge above it.

Deputies say there's evidence the three tried to contain the fire, but were unsuccessful. They also say nobody called emergency services.

Dallas County Conservation estimates the cost to replace the damaged bridge is nearly 900-thousand dollars.

Daniel Sheeder, Ezra Coulter, and Leola Pierce of Adel were arrested on Thursday and face multiple charges.
