(Des Moines, IA) -- The amount of rainfall in Des Moines on Monday shattered a record.

"The airport has reported 3.74 inches of rain yesterday. That broke the old record from 1937, which was 1.14 inches at that point," said Meteorologist Alexis Jimenez.

She says nearly two inches of rain fell in Lamoni and in Ames on Monday. The heavy rain is not expected to raise the river flood potential in Central Iowa because it's been such a dry spring.

"Even in the Des Moines area, we are looking primarily at bank rises. So no overflows at this point are expected," said Jimenez.

Another two inches of rain could fall in Central Iowa today, bringing the region to a normal level of precipitation for the year.

While the rain isn't expected to cause river flooding, it could still be hazardous on the roads. Jimenez warns to be cautious of any sort of ponding on roadways as the heavy rain continues, and to look out for common trouble spots.
