(Des Moines, IA) -- Hot car deaths are the leading cause of non-crash vehicle deaths for children ages 14 and under. The Polk County Sheriff's Office says heatstroke in vehicles occurs in three main scenarios.
These include children forgotten in vehicles by parents or caregivers, children getting into unlocked vehicles and then becoming trapped inside, and children knowingly being left in hot cars.
Parents and caregivers are urged to look for a child before getting out of the vehicle and to lock the car doors once both you and the child have exited.
