(Des Moines, IA) -- The City of Des Moines is warning citizens about a scam regarding text messages that claim people have unpaid parking tickets. The city says these are fake messages created by cybercriminals who are trying to trick residents into sharing their payment information.

Additionally, the Iowa Department of Vehicles says another texting scam involves false claims of unpaid tolls or traffic tickets.

Neither the city nor the state sends text messages about unpaid tickets or overdue fines, and there are no toll roads in Iowa to incur fines.
