(Des Moines, IA) -- Des Moines Public Schools has announced that fifteen schools within the district will serve as school-based food pantries, providing free summer meals and nutrition support throughout the metro area.
Six food pantry locations are designated "Healthy Kids Iowa" sites and will offer additional food items for families with children ages four to eighteen, available once per month.
In addition to the food pantries, over thirty locations will offer free meals to children eighteen and under. The free meals program, offered through the USDA Summer Food Service Program, will run from now through mid-August. Free summer meals will be available from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, except on holidays. Meals must be eaten on-site and are served on a first-come, first-served basis.
