(Des Moines, IA) -- A fire that broke out in an apartment complex at the corner of 57th and Douglass in Des Moines this (Tuesday) morning left one adult with serious burn injuries.

"The crews were able to rescue one adult male victim. He was taken out to the ambulance for treatment and then taken to Methodist Hospital," said Des Moines Fire Captain Chris Clement.

The condition of the man rescued is still unknown; however, Clement says the victim had burns to 40 percent of his body. No other injuries have been reported.

More than two dozen residents were evacuated from the complex, including two children.

"We did remove a couple of children from a nearby balcony where there was really no fire damage to the rest of the building. There was really no fire damage to the rest of the building; it was confined to that one apartment. The rest of the building primarily just has relatively minor smoke damage and then a little bit of water damage in the apartment," said Clement.

He tells WHO Radio News that firefighters are continuing to investigate the cause of the fire, although they believe it was an accidental fire caused by smoking materials.
