(West Des Moines, IA) — A manhunt got attention just north of I-235 off 73rd as federal agents got help from local police departments catching a wanted suspect.
"We were called to assist the ATF in apprehending a person with an active arrest warrant. Our officers tried to make a traffic stop; he fled on foot," said Sergeant Dan Wade, West Des Moines Police.
Witnesses say there were at least seven police cars and a K9 searching the area.
Wade says the terrain just north of 235 at 73rd required a lot of manpower.
"Combination of business parking lots, kind of a wooded area with a creek and some bridges, it takes a number of personnel to set that perimeter up. We wanted to make every reasonable effort to get this guy found and get him apprehended," said Wade.
They got the guy.
The manhunt got a lot of social media talk this afternoon.
"There was no event that occurred that was specific to any location there, any businesses or the YMCA or any of that. It was just that it happened to be the area where the suspect tried to run from the police," said Wade.
Witnesses posting photos and a video on social media say there was a large police presence and at least one K9 helping in the search Tuesday afternoon.
Wade tells WHO Radio News the man is wanted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms on a federal warrant.
