(Des Moines, IA) -- Several streets are being closed due to flash flooding from heavy rain overnight.

  • The City of Des Moines is closing:
  • The 19-hundred block of East Euclid Ave
  • 32-hundred Dean Ave
  • 19-humdred East University Ave
  • 33-hundred MLK Junior Parkway
  • 61-hundred block of Army Post Road

The streets will be reopened as water recedes.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports more than half of all flood-related drownings come from people driving into flooded roads. A car can be washed off the road by twelve inches of water, and it's possible that part of a street can be collapsed, unseen under the flood water.

The National Weather Service in Des Moines IA has issued a Flood Warning for Walnut Creek at Clive I-80/35 affecting Polk and Dallas Counties.

Minor flooding is forecast until late this evening.

Homes will be evacuated along the lower elevations of 75th St...78th St...and 80th St.

The creek is expected to rise above flood stage this morning to a crest around 13 feet late this morning. It will then fall below flood stage late this afternoon.

Flood stage is 9.0 feet.
