(Des Moines, IA ) -- There was a series of overnight storms, flash flooding, and tornado warnings this weekend in Des Moines and Ames. A tornado was confirmed near Ames. Police reported cars up to their bumpers in flash flood water in Des Moines.
A record amount of daily rainfall was recorded in Des Moines on Sunday. The National Weather Service reports 2.77 inches of rain fell during the day and about half of that amount came during the storms that rolled through the metro last night. It shatters the record of 2.41 inches set back in 1907.
Flash flooding and heavy rains over the weekend has closed a road and some trails in the Des Moines Metro. As of Sunday evening, the city closed George Flagg Parkway from South West 30th Street to Park Avenue.
Trail closures include the Bill Riley to Water Works Park, Walnut Creek from Center to Grand and Gay Lea Wilson from Sargent Park to Hubbell. Barriers will remain until the damage is assessed and clean up has been completed.
Motorists should also be aware that southwest 23rd Street to Fleur Drive on Park Avenue is closed as of today to install a new sidewalk. The work won't be complete until August 22nd. A detour will be posted using SW 23rd Street, Bell Avenue, and Fleur Drive. Motorists are being told to expect traffic delays.
Up to date closures are posted on the city's website.
