(Des Moines, IA) -- The state of Iowa is launching a pilot project that pays farmers to protect the state's water supply.

The project would pay farmers up to up to 35-hundred dollars per acre to implement buffer strips along streams that feed the water supplies of Des Moines and Cedar Rapids.

The 30-to-100 foot wide strips would help prevent nutrients from entering the waterways upstream of the cities.

The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship is budgeting three-million dollars for the project.
