Redevelopment Efforts In Des Moines Provide More Housing Options

(Des Moines, IA ) -- Redevelopment efforts in Des Moines are providing two, new apartment complexes, located in the Drake neighborhood and on the city's southside.

Sadie Trytten, Executive Director of the Neighborhood Development Corporation, says a ribbon cutting was held Wednesday at Forest Avenue Row Homes on 31rst Street. The 18 units include six, two-story, two bedroom apartments and twelve, one bedroom flats.

Trytten says the Park Indy Apartments on Park and Indianola Avenues is the other new complex. The $8.4 million project is built on property formerly used for manufactured homes. The new apartments have their own entrances and are a mix of one and two bedroom units.

She says the new complexes serve people who don't want live in outlying communities and aren't ready to buy homes.

"Not everyone can afford that down payment right now. So, it's a great option for first time home buyers that aren't quite there yet with that deposit saved that they can come in and have some place exciting to live, " said Trytten.
