Iowa State University claimed a narrow victory over the University of Iowa, winning 16-13 in the annual Cy-Hawk rivalry game on Saturday (September 6) in Ames, Iowa. The Cyclones secured the win with the help of kicker Kyle Konrardy, who nailed a crucial 54-yard field goal to break a 13-13 tie late in the game.
It was Konrardy's second-straight game-winning kick in the final two minutes against Iowa, both of which came from 54-yards. He became the first player in school history to hit multiple 50-plus yard field goals against Iowa in his career.
The Cyclones' defense played a pivotal role, sacking Iowa's quarterback Mark Gronowski twice in a row, pushing the Hawkeyes back and preventing them from advancing. Iowa State's defense held strong, forcing Iowa to punt and giving the Cyclones the opportunity to take the lead.
Iowa State has allowed just 471 points in the second half since the start of the 2021 season (55 games). That’s just 8.6 per game.
Rocco Becht, Iowa State's quarterback, contributed to the Cyclones' early lead by connecting with tight end Benjamin Brahmer for a two-yard touchdown. Despite the Hawkeyes' efforts, including a field goal by Drew Stevens to tie the game, Iowa State's defense and Konrardy's kicking sealed the victory.
ISU has had 87-straight games with over 50,000 fans at Jack Trice Stadium, a streak that goes back to 2011. This was the 20th sellout of 61,500 since the new configuration.
This win marks Iowa State's first home victory against Iowa in 14 years, ending a six-game losing streak in Ames.
Matt Campbell is now 67-51 at Iowa State and 102-66 overall as a head coach.
The Cyclones are 3-0 for the third-straight season. The Hawkeyes are 1-1 on the season.
