(IA) -- Political leaders on both sides of the aisle in Iowa are condemning the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

U-S Senator Joni Ernst says there has to be an end to political violence. "It's never okay, it's never okay to enact violence because you disagree with a person," said the Iowa Republican.

G-O-P and Democratic party leaders called the attack appalling and urged a lowering of the political temperature.

Hayden Padget, President of Young Republicans, believes Kirk's murder stemmed from his effectiveness in communicating his conservative views with the younger generation. He believes some people saw that as a threat.

Both Ernst and Padget believe Kirk's mission to talk in a respectful way to people who didn't share his views will endure.

"His life and his legacy will be carried on through his active work and words that have resonated with the younger generation and so many of us involved in politics," Ernst said.

Ernst and Padget made their comments to Jeff Angelo on the WHO Morning Show.

Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds has ordered all flags at half-staff until sunset on Sunday in memory of Kirk.
