IA Senate Majority Leader Jack Whitver Steps Down, Citing Health & Family

(Des Moines, IA) -- Iowa Senate Majority Leader Jack Whitver announced Tuesday he is stepping down from his leadership role and will not seek re-election in 2026.

The influential Grimes Republican cited his ongoing battle with a brain tumor and the need to focus on his family as the reasons for his decision. Whitver has led the Republican majority since 2018, overseeing a string of conservative legislative victories.

His departure will trigger a new leadership election within the Senate Republican caucus. Whitver's served in the Iowa Senate since 2011.
