Jury Awards Former Polk County HR Chief Over $4 Million in Libel Lawsuit

(Adel, IA) -- A Dallas County jury has awarded more than $4.26 million to a former Polk County H-R chief in a libel lawsuit against the county.

Jurors found that the former county administrator and two current supervisors intentionally damaged Jim Nahas's reputation when they fired him five years ago. Nahas argued he was used as a political pawn and was fired to damage another county official.

The award includes $4 million from the county for damages, plus smaller financial penalties from the three officials personally.

Nahas says he's thankful for the verdict while the county said it respects the decision and will consider its options.
