(Des Moines, IA) -- Interim Des Moines Public School Superintendent Matt Smith has a new contract. The board approved the contract Thursday morning. It will go run through the 2026-27 school year.
Smith says he's honored to step back into the position and help lead an amazing team to focus on the future.
“Des Moines Public Schools has not just been a job for me, it’s the place I trust with the education of my own children. The care and love our teachers and staff have for every student who walks through our doors is a daily inspiration to me,” said Smith.
Smith began his education career in 1999 as a teacher in Texas before joining the Des Moines Public School District as the principal at North High in 2001. Smith has served as an associate superintendent since 2018.
"Matt not only brings stability but also the energy and enthusiasm we want at the helm of DMPS, including being a true leader on our Reimagining Education initiative," said Jackie Norris, school board chair.
Smith replaces Ian Roberts, who resigned the position last week after being arrested by ICE for being in the U-S illegally and on weapons charges.
