(Des Moines, IA) -- The smell of what was believed to be natural gas forced a brief evacuation of a Des Moines elementary school Tuesday morning.

A spokesman for the Des Moines Fire Department says an investigation found there is no gas connection at Walnut Street School.

He adds the smell was likely produced when the school turned on its furnace for the first time that day.

Classes resumed without incident.
