(Springfield, IL) -- Illinois natural gas customers will see a lower than expected rate hike in the new year.

The Illinois Commerce Commission is reducing Ameren's rate request for natural gas delivery by nearly half.

The ICC is also telling the utility to adjust its discount program to keep the energy burden for low-income customers at 3%.

Ameren's initial ask would have amounted to a 13% increase for customers, or $10 per month.

Commissioners say their decision balances Ameren's needs with affordability.

The new gas delivery rate hike goes into effect in January.
