(Des Moines, IA) -- Over the past 15 years, the number of routes at Des Moines International Airport has more than doubled.

“We have record-breaking numbers of travelers coming through Des Moines, and we have more destinations than ever before,” said Sarah Hoodjer of Des Moines International Airport.

In 2010, Hoodjer says the airport offered 17 destinations. Today, DSM International Airport flies to 35 destinations, with hopes to add even more in the future.

The airport is currently constructing a new terminal to expand and modernize its facilities. Hoodjer says a driving factor behind the terminal expansion is the airport’s continued growth. The new terminal is expected to begin opening in January 2027.

“Des Moines in general has grown. I think the increase has largely been in leisure travel markets, where people are flying to beaches, California, and other places for quick vacations before returning home,” said Hoodjer.

Hoodjer says the most popular route out of Des Moines is to Denver, Colorado. Other popular routes include major travel hubs with many connections, such as Atlanta and Chicago.

Several new routes at DSM International Airport were announced earlier this year, including non-stop flights from Allegiant Airlines to Fort Myers, Philadelphia, and Burbank.

Hoodjer says the airport hopes to continue adding more routes in the future and expects the terminal expansion will attract additional airlines and destinations.
