(Iowa City, IA) -- The state of Iowa is asking a Johnson County District Court to dismiss a lawsuit involving a new state voting law.
Fourteen voters filed a lawsuit arguing that a state law requiring the three counties with regent universities to elect supervisors by district rather than at large is unconstitutional.
The state argues the law is needed to give rural voters more influence in counties where college students vote.
The voters from Johnson, Black Hawk and Story counties argue that the law limits the powers of voters.
Johnson County's Board is scheduled to vote on its new district electoral map January 8th.
