(Iowa) -- A bill in the Iowa Senate would authorize schools to offer an elective junior firefighter program for 11th and 12th graders.

If passed into law, Senate File 2086 would require schools that offer the junior fire fighter program to coordinate with the fire service training bureau and a local fire department to make sure students have all the necessary training to complete a firefighter 1 certification. Schools could offer the program as an extracurricular activity or as part of a career or technical education curriculum. If a student completed the curriculum and earns passing scores on all requirements for a firefighter 1 certification before turning age 18, the administrator would have to wait to issue the certification until the student turns 18.
