(Des Moines, IA) -- A proposal advancing in the Iowa House would prohibit the Iowa Department of Transportation from offering driver’s license exams in any language other than English. House File 2102 would eliminate the current exception that allows those exams to be taken in other languages.

Lawmakers who support the bill say that because English is Iowa’s official language, driver testing should only be conducted in English. Opponents argue that offering the exams in other languages does not harm public safety and ensures drivers fully understand the material.
