Murder Impacts Omaha Faith Community

Martin Zak

(Omaha, NE) -- Police say the man accused of killing an Omaha Catholic deacon is the son of the deacon.

Investigators say 36-year-old Martin Zak is accused of murdering his father, 69-year-old John Zak, along with felony theft, and fleeing police.

John Zak was a deacon at St. Peter Catholic Church, located at 27th and Leavenworth in Omaha, for over 25 years.

Martin Zak was booked into Douglas County Corrections for criminal homicide and the other charges.

The investigation began late Wednesday night when Uniform Patrol officers were sent to a house near 36th and Cass Streets on a report of a missing person.

During the investigation, officers found a deceased man.

A vehicle of interest description was developed by investigators: a Blue Mazda SUV.

Officers then saw the vehicle around 8:30 a.m. Thursday and attempted a traffic stop.

The driver refused to pull over and led officers on a pursuit that ended near 10th and Martha Streets.

The driver was taken into custody as a person of interest.
