Iowans Brave Freezing Temps for Annual St. Patrick’s Day Celebration

(Des Moines, IA ) -- Below‑freezing temperatures didn’t stop Iowans from turning out for this year’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade in downtown Des Moines.

Grand Avenue was filled with parade‑goers dressed in green and carrying Irish flags. Temperatures stayed in the teens, but spectators continued to line the route throughout the morning.

“It’s just fun. To me there’s always a really cool sense of community, even if you’re Irish or not everyone is just out and wants to enjoy the day,” said Amy Sue Alesch.

The parade, organized by the Friendly Sons of Saint Patrick of Central Iowa, featured Irish dancing, live music, beer, and plenty of beads and candy. Local businesses, schools, and community groups also took part in the lineup.

Parade chairman Colton O’Connor said the crowd is what makes the event meaningful. “I think the people is the most important part of the parade. Seeing everybody smile and seeing everybody happy, that’s what makes it special for me,” O’Connor said.

Des Moines has hosted the parade since 1981.
