(Des Moines, IA) -- The Roosevelt Sharks are celebrating a major milestone this spring as the nation’s longest‑running synchronized swimming club marks its 100th anniversary.

“The pageants are a huge demonstration of the love for the club. Having something that’s lasted for 100 years is a true testament not only to the people currently involved, but to those who were part of it years, even decades, ago,” said Katherine Gamble, director of the Roosevelt Sharks.

Founded in 1926, the Sharks began as the first athletic club available to women at Roosevelt High School. At a time when girls had limited access to organized sports, the club offered a rare opportunity for athletic expression, teamwork, and leadership. What started as a group focused on swimming, life‑saving skills, and diving has grown into a century‑long tradition passed down through generations.

“We are just taking care of it while we are here, because we know it was around a long time before us and will continue to be here long after us. Our job is to make sure we honor the past and pass on a great club to the girls of the future,” Gamble said.

Today, the club remains entirely student‑led. Members choreograph routines, design costumes, create backdrops and programs, and manage many aspects of the annual show. Gamble says that ownership and autonomy are a big part of why students are so passionate about the Sharks. Students coach and choreograph for their peers, learning leadership and communication skills in the pool.

Land practices begin in January. From February until the pageant, students practice their routines every day after school and spend about eight hours in the pool on Saturdays.

Unlike competitive synchronized swimming teams, the Sharks focus solely on their annual pageant. This year’s centennial performance will highlight the club’s early roots, showcase its evolution, and feature appearances from former members spanning multiple decades.

The Sharks’ centennial pageant will take place April 23 and 24 at Roosevelt High School.
