(Iowa) -- A new report lists the "Horrible Hundred" puppy mills across the country, and five of them are found in Iowa.
The report from Humane World for Animals, formerly the Humane Society of the United States, defines a puppy mill as an inhumane breeding facility where dogs are kept in cramped cages with little regard for their health. Of the five Iowa breeders and facilities that made the list, three have made the list in years past.
The five Iowa puppy mills and breeders included in the nationwide "Horrible Hundred" list include:
- Ricky and Mary Brodersen with Mystical in, Kiron (third time on the "Horrible Hundred" report)
- William Davenport of Afton
- Ruthie Ewoldt with Furkids in Toronto (second time on the "Horrible Hundred" report
- Kimberly Olson of Kimi’s Precious Treasures in Joice, Iowa
- Wuanita Swedlund of Farmington (third time on the "Horrible Hundred" report)
Humane World for Animals says mills often sell puppies online or to pet stores. The organization finds more than half of the breeders included in the report are USDA licensed. The full, most recent "Horrible Hundred" report is available on the Humane World of Animals website.
