A woman injured in a downtown Des Moines shooting on Friday has died.
Police say 50-year old Abdul Jabbar Jackson shot 40-year-old Jessica Henderson and her dog, and also shot at one of Henderson's friends, before shooting himself at about 5:45 p.m. on Tuttle Street.
Neither Jackson or the dog survived. Henderson was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, but passed away Saturday morning.
An arrest warrant was issued for Jackson in late April for first-degree harassment charges after Henderson reported him for sending her threatening messages. Henderson said she had recently broken off a relationship with him. Officers also found a GPS tracker on Henderson’s car the day after she filed the report, and named Jackson as a suspect.
Jackson was located and arrested for the harassment charges on Wednesday, May 6. He posted bond and was released six hours before the shooting.
In a statement, Henderson's family says domestic violence is a public safety issue and urges the community to take warning signs seriously.
The Des Moines Police Department says the case is still an active investigation and more details will be released as they become available.
