(Johnston, IA) -- An officer-involved shooting at a home in Johnston has injured a sheriff's deputy and left the suspect dead.
Polk County Sheriff's Lieutenant Mark Chance says deputies and US Marshalls were serving the suspect with a mental health order and a criminal mischief warrant from another county.
He says the suspect barricaded himself into the garage of the home, located in the 57-hundred block of Linden Court.
"As soon as they opened the garage door, the suspect shot multiple rounds at the officers, hitting one of the Polk County deputies in the hand. He has non-life threatening injuries. Once the shots were fired, officers returned fire. The subject then started the garage on fire, and was ultimately found in the garage deceased," said Chance.
There's no word on the suspect's cause of death.
Chance says the parents of the suspect were safely evacuated from the home before shots were fired.
The fire was contained to the garage and quickly put out.
The Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation is leading the inquiry into the shooting.
