(Ames, IA ) -- Researchers at Iowa State are investigating how menopause can affect the brain. The BRAVA Study (BRAin & VAscular) will examine how menopause may accelerate brain and blood vessel aging. It will follow 370 women in menopause to examine changes in brain blood flow and it's link to cognitive function, biomarkers, and overall brain health. Researchers hope the findings will help explain women's higher risk of stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, and dementia.
The study will follow nearly 370 women across the stages of the menopause transition over the next 3 years. Researchers are looking for women in pre- (regular menstrual cycle), peri- (irregular menstrual cycle), and early post-menopause (within 5 years of their final menstrual cycle) between the ages 40-64 years. Women who do not experience a menstrual cycle because their uterus has been removed are also eligible.
