(Washington D.C.) -- Senator Chuck Grassley is pushing back on speculation that he has filed preliminary paperwork for a 2028 reelection bid.
Online reports and social media posts have circulated in recent days claiming Grassley has filed paperwork to run again, but the Iowa Republican says he's not focused on the 2028 election. Instead, he says his attention is on the next 21 days leading up to the midterm elections.
"If you asked today, I'd say ask me next year. What I'm focused on right now is the next 21 days to help Republicans get elected to the United States Senate, not worrying about 2028," Grassley said.
Grassley says the paperwork is required under federal campaign finance law to continue raising campaign funds and should not be viewed as a formal campaign announcement. The last time he filed similar paperwork was in 2022.
Grassley has represented Iowa in the U.S. Senate since 1981. The reports have drawn attention because Grassley is 93 years old. He would be 95 during the 2028 election and 101 by the end of another six-year Senate term.
