If you've been to an Iowa Cubs Game you may not know his name, but you're certainly familiar with his catchphrase. His simple "yummy, yummy, yummy, woooooo" marketing tool has become almost as iconic as Cubby Bear! You may know him as the funnel cake or cotton candy guy, but his name is Alex Gomez and he's in charge of operations for Cedar Rapids based G&G Concessions, Inc who contracts for the Iowa Cubs.
I've been going to Iowa Cubs games since I was a child, but in recent years, Gomez' playful antics have become as much a part of the Iowa Cubs experience as the game itself. But what surprised me last season is when I noticed he was no longer performing his routine solo. The crowd had joined in!
Gomez, who has been with the company for 10 years, said it all started as a simple marketing tool to sell more concessions, but he never imagined his catchphrase would catch on! The call and response starts out with Alex saying "Yummy, Yummy, Yummy" with the crowd calling back "woooooo" with him!
As the first to arrive and last to leave, he's a busy guy, but he says time spent in the stands are his favorite. So, the next time you go to an Iowa Cubs game and hear Gomez' famous "yummy, yummy, yummy" routine, make sure to do your part and chant back "woooooo," as you dig for some cash to buy a funnel cake, of course!
