Texas warm air hits Des Moines but not record highs

DES MOINES, IOWA - The big warm up is here today and Saturday, with warm air moving into Iowa from the south, but with the record at 60, we won't be setting a new record high.

"Temperatures normally for this time of year are in the low to mid 30's."  National Weather Service Meteorologist Kurt Kotenberg tells WHO Radio News.

"Highs for Saturday are close to 50 degrees, so I think we'll be a solid 5 to 10 degrees below the record, but, definitely warmer than normal."

Kotenberg says this two-day January thaw is air coming from Texas, and our usually cold Iowa air is pushing east and south east with the snowbirds.

"It's cold in Florida, that high pressure is pushing down colder air that we normally get in Iowa.  Then, we are getting warmer air from the Texas and Oklahoma region that's putting in into the 40's and possibly the 50's."  Kotenberg said.

It won't last.

More typical January weather returns Sunday into Monday with drizzle and possible icing.
