DES MOINES, Iowa - State money would be withheld from any city in Iowa that refuses keep illegal immigrants in jail an additional 48 hours after being arrested for a crime if requested by ICE, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
The Iowa House on Tuesday approved an amended bill that was passed to them by the Iowa Senate. One of the most notable changes made by the House specifies that the federal requests to hold a suspect must be made in writing, and removing verbal requests.
Supporters say the bill returns the rule of law and helps prevent more crimes from being committed.
The bill passed on a party line vote and heads back to the Iowa Senate.
