State Senator to Announce Candidacy for U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley's Seat

SOIUX CITY, Iowa - Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley could have a primary opponent if he runs for reelection next year.

Republican Iowa State Senator Jim Carlin of Sioux City is expected to announce his candidacy for Grassley's seat Monday at 8 a.m.

Carlin has been in the State Senate since 2017, and was elected to the Iowa House a year earlier.

He introduced a bill this year requiring Iowa's Board of Regents to survey state university employees for their political affiliation.

Grassley is the second oldest member of the U.S. Senate at age 87 and has not said if he'll run for reelection in 2022.

An email from Carlin said he would make his announcement Monday at the American Legion post in Sergeant Bluff, Iowa. The email was sent for Carlin's Sioux City law firm.
