Iowa DOT Offers Post-Thanksgiving Message To Drivers

(Ames, IA) -- Thanksgiving travelers and those taking part in the post-Thanksgiving shopping will see a new message on electronic signs along Iowa's Interstate highways today (Friday).

The Iowa Department of Transportation is sharing the latest data, including year-to-date fatalities in crashes. So far this year, there have been 318-deaths in crashes in Iowa.

The Iowa State Patrol says an aggressive driving trend that started to ramp up during pandemic lock-downs is still a problem. The I-S-P says last year, 158-deaths were attributed to aggressive drivers. Last year Iowa State Troopers issued nearly 1,500 speeding citations, more than double the number issued in 2019.

The State Patrol has posted this message and a link to a YouTube video which demonstrates the consequences of higher speed crashes.

We all have to alter our behavior behind the wheel and understand that exceeding the speed limit can cause harm to ourselves, the ones we love, and everyone on the roadways with us. Whether you’re involved in a single-vehicle crash where you’re the only one who ends up in the emergency room or you crash into a family’s minivan, there are consequences to your actions that impact those around you. Even a small increase in speed can significantly increase the danger of injury or death in a crash.
