Linn County Jail Inmate Found Unresponsive, Dies

(Linn County, IA) -- An investigation is underway after a female inmate in the Linn County Jail was found unconscious and unresponsive on the floor early this (Thursday) morning. Staff began CPR and used an AED, the inmate was transferred to Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids where she died shortly after her arrival.

The Linn County Sheriff's Office says the inmate had been in custody since 6:20 PM Wednesday, and was last checked on by staff at 1:20 AM.

Sheriff’s Office investigators have found no apparent cause for the inmate’s medical emergency. The Linn County Medical Examiner has ordered an autopsy to help determine her cause of death and her body has been transported to the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Ankeny. The death has been reported to the State Jail Inspector and the incident remains under investigation.

The inmate’s name will be released after appropriate notification of relatives.
