Volunteers Construct Eight New Houses Near Altoona

(Des Moines, IA) -- Construction has been underway on eight new Habitat for Humanity houses this week near Altoona.

"These are going to be three to four bedroom homes about twelve to fourteen hundred square feet each," said Danny Akright, with Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity. He says the plan is to eventually build a total of 15 new homes on the new street block across from Delaware Elementary school.

Nearly 400 volunteers helped with this week's Habitat construction activities, including raising walls, framing, and getting the houses done enough to be sealed off from winter weather.

Danny Akright says concrete slabs were already poured for the eight houses being built this week. Final construction is slated between next March and July.

"Over that kind of four month time span, those houses will go from from in progress, to completely finished, to having a family to call them home," Akright said.

Danny Akright, with Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity, says they'll hold a "construction blitz" from time to time and are always looking for good places to build. Those interested in volunteering can learn more at their website.
