(Pella, IA) -- Two students are recovering after being hurt in a knife attack at Pella Middle School Wednesday morning.

Pella Police Chief Shane McSheehy said in a news conference:

"A 14 year-old student at Pella Middle School used a knife to assault multiple students who were in the cafeteria at the time."

Two female students were cut during the assault, though their injuries were minor, and they were treated on site without needing to be taken to an area hospital. McSheehy says police received reports of the assault a little after 7:41am. Police responded within minutes and secured the scene quickly with the help of a teacher who was able to talk the student into surrendering. Investigators say the 14 year-old suspect has exhibited behavioral problems in the past, including having assaulted a school counselor in February of this year.

No word yet on whether the suspect will be tried as an adult in the aftermath of Wednesday's assault.
