(Ames, IA) -- The City of Ames is looking to try out a new pilot program to help conserve electricity, especially during times of peak usage.
Joel Zook, with the City of Ames says they're looking for 20 people to volunteer with the pilot program in 2025, before offering it to more electric customers.
"We are going to have a limited number of people," Zook said, "and we are going to ask, 'do you have solar?' 'do you have an electric vehicle?' We're going to try to get a mix of households so we can get good data from that."
Customers who shift some of their energy usage to off-peak periods could see savings in their electric bill. Zook says they'll especially be monitoring during the summer months.
"It could be that they're only five to ten hours during the year that are really looking at being a very high, high peak, and those are going to be during the summer months," Zook said, especially during the late afternoon and early evening during the summer.
The city says the plan also follows their recently adopted climate action plan.
Ames Electric Services will be taking applications online through Friday, January 10th, 2025.
